WIN STUFF: Win 2 tix to see Eleanor Friedberger at U Street Music Hall!

Indie songstress Eleanor Friedberger, the female half of brother-sister duo Fiery Furnaces, has been exploring in recent years what it is like to be a solo artist. Soon after announcing Fiery Furnaces’ hiatus in 2011, Eleanor released Last Summer, the solo album that proclaimed her ability to write, record, and perform successfully independent of her brother Matthew. Earlier this month, nearly two years after Last Summer, Friedberger released her sophomore solo album Personal Record, which has reaffirmed the poppy songbird’s penchant for creative, observant storytelling.

With Personal Record in tow, Friedberger makes her way across the country, with a stop nearby at U Street Music Hall, before departing for the United Kingdom. Playing in support of Friedberger are up-and-coming indie-psych band TEEN, who have been releasing music through DC's own Carpark Records.

For your chance to see Eleanor Friedberger and TEEN on Thursday, June 27 at U Street Music Hall, please do one of the following:

1. Leave a comment below, using a valid email address and the name you'd ilke your tickets to be held under should you win, telling us your favorite band of siblings.

2. Retweet this or tweet the following:

WIN STUFF: Win 2 tix to see Oberhofer at U Street Music Hall!

CONTEST CLOSED

Whether headlining Black Cat or opening for Matt & Kim at 9:30 Club, Oberhofer routinely wow D.C. crowds with their infectious indie pop/rock and wildly energetic shows, complete with amp kicking and jumping from drum kits. Surely, their upcoming appearance at U Street Music Hall on Friday, May 3 will be no exception.

Oberhofer began in 2008 as the solo project of New York University music composition student Brad Oberhofer, who started writing music at age thirteen while recovering from being hit by a car (find out more about that story in our interview with Oberhofer himself). Oberhofer soon after enlisted the help of more musicians to fully bring to life the sounds of his singles, such as 2010's o0Oo0Oo0, in opening slots on tours with Sleigh Bells, The Morning Benders, and Neon Indian. Fast-forward a few years to 2012 and Oberhofer is signed to Glassnote Records (also home of Phoenix, Mumfod & Sons, Two Door Cinema Club, and GIVERS) to release their debut album Time Capsules II.

Just last this week, Oberhofer released a follow-up, five-track EP to Time Capsules II titled Notalgia. Hear two of the tracks - "You + Me (Still Together In The Future)" and "Together/Never" - here:

For your chance to hear Oberhofer's in-yer-face-RAWK (as Carrie so aptly put it in her review of their 9:30 Club slot late last year) FO' FREE at U Street Music Hall, please do one of the following:

1. Leave a comment below, using a valid email address, telling us the weirdest last name you've ever come across.

2. Retweet this or tweet the following:

WIN STUFF: Win 2 tix to see Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band at U Street Music Hall!

CONTEST CLOSED

D.C., being the multi-cultural crossroad that it is, is a great place for musicians from all corners of the globe to team up, influence one another, and create new music. Such was the case for Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band, whose members hail from various countries including Romania, Ghana, and Nigeria. The result of their meeting each other? A funky, fourteen-piece orchestra with horn, rhythm, and percussion sections that meld traditional West African musical styles with modern influences. Adding even more to Chopteeth’s worldly vibe are the group’s vocalists who sing in a total of seven foreign languages.

Since forming in 2004, Chopteeth has garnered much local acclaim, most notably through winning numerous Wammies from the Washington Area Music Association. Among the band’s prizes are Wammies for Best World Music Group in 2007, Best Debut Reording in 2008 for their album Struggle, and 2009 Artist of the Year. Chopteeth, reaching a milestone of ten years as a band next year, continue to play local venue and festival circuits as well as travel around the country, sharing the infectious Afrofunk they create.

For your chance to see Chopteeth for free at U Street Music Hall on Saturday, April 20, please do one of the following:

1. Leave a comment below, using a valid email address, telling us to which country you’d most like to travel and why.

2. Retweet this or tweet the following:
